DEVELOPMENTAL SPECIALIST I - BASIC

Position Title:  Developmental Specialist I - Basic

Status:  Non-Exempt

Minimum Qualifications:  High School Diploma or GED, is at least 18 years of age plus 45 hour entry level course in early childhood.  Initial application for Developmental Specialist Certification must be made within 30 days of hire through the Department of Health, DDSD, and Family Infant Toddler Program.

Maximum Qualifications:  Academic course work in approved fields per DOH/DDSD FIT Program Policy working towards Associate’s Degree.  Initial application for Developmental Specialist Certification must be made within 30 days of hire through the Department of Health, DDSD, and Family Infant Toddler Program.

Supervised By:  Early Childhood Director

Supervises:  None

Compensation: Salary Schedule

Part Time Equivalent: Hourly

Working Hours: Determined by Early Childhood Director

Roles, Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  A certified Developmental Specialists I – Basic, can provide the following services to eligible infants, toddlers, and their families:

a.  Complete Plan (IFSP) team and other staff; these duties are to be assigned by the supervisor;

b. Support the ability of families and other primary caregivers to implement activities outlined in the IFSP; these activities will be designed by a Developmental Specialist II, III or other qualified team member; and

2.  Participate in the IFSP meeting.

3.  A certified Developmental Specialist I Basic, cannot provide the following services to eligible infants, toddlers, and their families:

a.  Conduct a comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluation;

b.  Write the evaluation report;

c.  Develop the IFSP, including writing outcomes and strategies;

4.  Conduct a home visit without the presence of a DS II or DS III or other qualified personnel: e.g. therapist.

5.  Assure the health, safety and nutritional needs of all children and follow policies and procedures pertaining to health and safety.

6.  Carry out daily duties and responsibilities as identified by the supervisor that support the operation of center and home/community services.

7.  Lift maximum of 40 pounds (immobile children and their mobility apparatus).

8.  Maintain open lines of communication between supervisor, co-workers, families’ therapists and any other individuals you might be in contact with in the course of your work day, to facilitate a productive working relationship.

9.  Participate in the development and/or direct provision of transportation supports to children/families.

10. Participate in the ongoing record keeping activities of child/family services (daily attendance, room assignment, billing of typical and special needs children, accident/incident reports, monthly progress notes, therapy session notes, and filing).

11. Participate in transition activities for children/families as designated by supervisor.

12. Participate in a minimum of 25 hours of training per fiscal year as required by FIT and as outlined in Children, Youth and Families Department Licensing Policies and Regulations.

13. Attend classes, trainings, workshops, and/or participate in activities to support 3 year recertification for Developmental Specialist I – Basic, as outlined in FIT Requirements and regulations.

14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical, Mental, and Visual Skills:

1.  Good organizational skills.

2.  Ability to use logical thinking to solve problems.

3.  Ability to perform light to medium work lifting and/or carrying  of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, performing such activities as stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, and grasping.

Working Environments:
The major activities of the job are carried out in the following:  Indoors 70%, outdoors 20%, and 10% in a car or van.
